The Star Wars Force Awakens budget is expected to reach somewhere between $175 and $200 million according to Alan Horn, a Disney chairman. If that is the case, then this would be the most expensive Star Wars movie ever made.
“We need to give the audience, essentially, a full meal in return for their affection and devotion and love for these properties,” he added. “We don’t give budgets out. But it will be a big, tent-pole movie budget.”
Star Wars Force Awakens Budget
$200 Million
If we were to put this in perspective with some other major movies, this is what we would have.
1. | Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides | $ 378.5 |
2. | Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End | $ 300.0 |
3. | John Carter | $ 263.7 |
4. | Tangled | $ 260.0 |
5. | Spider-Man 3 | $ 258.0 |
6. | Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince | $ 250.0 |
7. | The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies | $ 250.0 |
8. | Avatar | $ 237.0 |
9. | The Dark Knight Rises | $ 230.0 |
10. | The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian | $ 225.0 |
11. | The Lone Ranger | $ 225.0 |
12. | Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest | $ 225.0 |
13. | Man of Steel | $ 225.0 |
14. | The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug | $ 225.0 |
15. | The Avengers | $ 220.0 |
16. | Men in Black 3 | $ 215.0 |
17. | Oz the Great and Powerful | $ 215.0 |
18. | X-Men: The Last Stand | $ 210.0 |
19. | Transformers: Age of Extinction | $ 210.0 |
20. | Battleship | $ 209.0 |
The good news is that nothing is written in stone. While the initial budget is set at about $200 million, it doesn’t mean that is all the money they have to make the film. In fact, many have said that this could be the first billion dollar movie.
Another thing to think about is that money doesn’t always equal quality, and box office success. Some of the best movies ever created were some that had the smallest budgets, while there has been other movies with much larger budgets that just never materialized at the box office. While having a big budget helps, film quality is simply more than just dollars.
Star Wars is a force, no pun intended, that has a monster fan base and culture running behind it. It’s a franchise like no other in movie and entertainment history, and that power will drive dollars and talent to the set in my opinion.
We have about 8 months until The Force Awakens, and I honestly believe we are going to have one awesome movie.
